Landscape. 9 + 1 Young Dutch Landscape Architects

This publication appears in conjunction with the series of exhibitions entitled 'Landscape 9 + 1 Young Dutch Landscape Architects' held in the NAi. Both the exhibitions and the book are a sequel to 'Nine + One Ten Young Dutch Architectural Offices', the nationally and internationally acclaimed series featuring young architectural practices. Landscape gives insight into the very latest developments in contemporary landscape architecture in the Netherlands. With the blurring of the distinction between city and landscape, the position of landscape architecture in spatial planning is gaining in stature. For it is in this discipline that hybrid forms are emerging that bring urban functions into contact with ecological notions, and enrich classic definitions of 'nature' with cultural components. These days landscape architects are involved in the most varied assignments, ranging from large-scale regional plans to small private gardens. The new generation as portrayed in Landscape explores the entire spectrum of the (urban) field, excelling in new positions on, for example, the embedding in the landscape of typical urban functions such as the transport infrastructure. Urban public space, under pressure these days from processes of fragmentation, is another aspect to receive their scrutiny. In his introductory essay Henk van Blerck outlines a framework for the way of working and the design stance of the practices taking part, within the context of a changing Dutch spatial planning. Jörg Dettmar draws a comparison with international developments in the field. The exhaustive documentation made by the landscape architects themselves, gives an enlightening picture of ten practices: Annemieke Diekman, DS, Eker & Schaap, Juurlink & Geluk, Kaap 3, Parklaan, Studio I. S., Veenenbos & Bosch, Vista and West 8.
